SUNGAI CHOH (13) : Once Upon A Time | Where Light Came From

Once Upon A Time
(The Gasoline Lamp Lighted Up The Entire Room)

Sometimes I kept on wondering where light came from. Yet it was still amazing when the gasoline lamp lighted up the entire room. The light was so enchanting. It seemed  to danced on the walls and in the corners of the room.Yet we could do nothing, just looked at the gasoline lamp. The only source of light. There was nothing was offered at night to keep us stay awake all night. There was no bedtime story and no sleep orchestras whatever. No  tv or radio and  no electronic games to play. So might as well we kept  snoring all night long. Yet  no girl would come to my dream to play the main character. However, ten-year-olds had to go to bed early for school. Although Sekolah Umum Sungai Choh was not even half a mile away.

Sometimes my eldest brother and I played shadow games to fill the nightlong weekend. It was amusing to see shadows in different shapes. By twisting our fingers against the light, we could also performed a shadow show, a simple wayang kulit. Anyway my eldest brother was good at making shadows in various shapes. I think he deserved to be Tok Dalang of our family. Might be I could be just as good as Awang Batil. However all night long, it was really quiet and dark. There was no dancing of lights to be seen and no rhythm of  colours to be heard. We could only see dark space with frightening  shadows and scary sounds. Sometimes we could hear the beats of raindrops or the wild cries of animals. However the night calls slowly fading away. Finally the entire Kampung Sungai Choh was covered with darkness. By then silence filled every corner of darkness.

Nevertheless we just let the time pass by in silence. Every night was empty and meaningless. It's just a scary darkness. Sometimes we found it hard to sleep. So we might as well count  the holes in the roof or imagine the moon looking shy. As it’s said, "counting sheep  jump over a fence one by one" was a mental exercise for when you have trouble sleeping. Sometimes we felt like cold air entered  the room through the cracks in the wooden walls. Once in a while we could hear the click sounds of lizards under the roof and the wild calls from somewhere in the distance. By then everything was  like a dream,  floating in the cool breeze of the night. However the night  was so nostalgic  to  let the night rhythms whisper in the ears in the dark.   Sometimes we just let a few mosquitoes entertain us with songs that annoyed us.

SUNGAI CHOH (11) : Once Upon A Time | To Gain The Girls' Admiration

Once Upon A Time
(The Beginning Of My Glamor Path To Fame)

Elo Episode
Starian Friends '63
Kampung Girls

Road To SRK

I was a typical Bengkulu boy. Sometimes I was a dreamer, trying to create a glamour for myself. Somehow I tried to be special, and dominant in whatever, especially in my class.  However I was not really a romantic hero. Yet I wanted to show my potential strength, just to gain the girls' admiration. Finally the day to make my dream seemed to be giving me a chance. So I challenged a thin boy of Kampung Tanjung to a fight. His name was Hassan Kedah. Our boxing ring was decided below  the slope near  a pump house. I invited two of my close friends to be the witness of the great event. Of course this should be the beginning of my glamor path to fame

However fate was not on my side. I was totally defeated with some bad lumps on my forehead. What the hell was going on? So I kept  on wondering, what actually made a skinny boy so strong. Suddenly  having "urat dawai tulang besi". What a shame. All of a sudden I lost my walk of fame. So it was a wrong strategy after all. Anyway this sickening tragedy had given me a great lesson. Even the moral of the story was too good to ignore. So, "do not ever judge your opponent by his physical appearance". I should keep that it in my mind. Though it was hard to admit,  yet no doubt  that  I had lost my inspirational dreams. Only to accept the fact that, " once beaten twice shy'. By then I lost my fame as Bangkulu hero.

What else could I do. By then, I had no brain to get a good number in the class,  even top ten. What a pity, I had to challenge the girls in the class: Imut, Itam, Limah, Bedah, Kam, Ipot  and others.  Especially my cousin Hanifah, whom I called “boy”. Though a bit funny to hear the name, yet she and other girls firmly controlled the top ten numbers in the class. They all "pacak gale", whereas the boys simply took the exam. No revision and no preparation whatever. So it didn't matter what the numbers were. Thus finally I just let my dream float and dissolve in thin air. I felt like losing my motivation and  my competitiveness. I was afraid I might lose myself in the class. Might be, I was just the unknown hero who had just lost his battle ground.

SUNGAI CHOH (11) : Once Upon A Time | A Journey Of Romahtic Escapism

Once Upon A Time

I couldn't remember when I started making a romantic approach  or  appearing as a macho boy.  Might be this was the beginning of a dream, a journey of romantic escapism. However in the late 50s,  there was no such a word "girlfriend" or "boyfriend". No business of matching or  pairing  with each other. It's just that, there was no love feeling whatever. Actually The Bangkulu boys in the fifty were too naive and innocent to explore the girls' secret. We only accepted the girls as  regular friends, no feeling whatsoever. Even  their smiles had no vibration, as to make a second look or to feel strange or awkward.

That's why their parents had nothing to worry because their daughters would be safe and sound in our hands, whose “hingus masih melilih”.  Actually we were like siblings. We went to school together, learned together and went home together.  Normally togetherness did not make any difference  amongst us.  So did habitual relationship made us feel nothing, “funny or weird”. We even  played "pondok-pondok", as husband and wife with four or five children. Yet, no "monkey business" whatever. Sometimes holding hands in a dark corner when playing Hide and Seek. However there was no harm done. Might be, we were too naive or too immature  to have a close relationship with girls or  to try something bad or immoral.

We were actually ignorant with feelings of wanting to love and being loved. Even the feeling of wanting to be stylish or admired did not  cross our minds and feelings. Instead,  today's  children  are self-conscious. That’s the awareness of their existence as an individual being. Feeling that everyone is looking and everyone is whispering.  Therefore, as far as possible the boys will try to look smart in the eyes of others, especially the girls. On the other hand, the girls are more beauty conscious. The word “pretty’ is a magical motivation to make them always appear attractive. So it is not a strange phenomenon to see our granddaughters  always looking at the mirror, smiling or complaining about their appearance.

SUNGAI CHOH (10) : Once Upon A Time | A Family Oriented Game

Once Upon A Time
(A Long-Forgotten Traditional Heritage )

Sometimes every traditional children's games has its own season. Mostly outdoor games such as marble, kite flying, top spinning, jumping ropes, bamboo gun war game, shooting rubber band, spider tournament, playing cigarette boxes - you name it  . These were the traditional children's games of the 50s. Especially for the boys of Bangkulu, of course very challenging and competating. Actually we did not know who started the game. Might  be every game  had its round. Nevertheless, there was no specific time to stop the round. However, sometimes the season played its role too in starting the game. The game would finish its round as the weather changed,  especially playing kite during windy day.

However, boys and girls had different fitness,  interest and  taste. So only the boys played the rough games, but then,  did not misinterpret.  We were not against  gender equality.  Once in a while we also ventured  into the girls' corner,  playing their games, such as Batu Saremban, Congkak, Ketiting, Galah Panjang, Hide-and-seek  and konda Kondi. Although, not so challenging, yet the games taught us simple counting, especially Batu Seremban.  So, no wonder the girls  always top in the class. Anyway it was difficult  to accept certain tasks in the game of "masak-masak", especially when you were asked to collect firewood or to make an errand to buy all sort of things. However  It was  a family oriented game.  Teaching us particular roles in the family.

Even pretending to cook, had taught the Bangkulu girls how to manage the kitchen and how to be good wives as well.  Unfortunately all those  traditional children's games are no longer children’s favourite nowadays. They are abandoned in the course of time, in the dark corner as a long-forgotten traditional heritage. Gradually losing their artistic value and missing their sign of recognition. Whereas modern gameplays with technological equipments such as computers, mobile phones and other devices have captured the hearts and minds of our young generation. Only to make them floating in cyberspace and losing in their own homes.
